It's here! Today is the first day to kick off All Things Open 2023. Today's programming is focused on a Community Leadership Summit, as well as Inclusion and Diversity in Open Source. I attended the CLS last year. While I was kind of the wrong audience for it, it was still cool to sit in on topics that others held dear. As a former ERG and Engagement Committee leader, it's been important to me to attend the Inclusion and Diversity programming at ATO. I always hope to get new ideas for how to engage staff and teammates, and promote diversity and equity in hiring and retaining people. One of my biggest takeaways last year was the addition of the "B" to DEIB--Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. It's great to get diversity on paper, but it's not enough to check some boxes. We need to retain underrepresented groups, and the way to do that is by making people feel welcome. Belonging is the idea that people know their niche at a company, know that their contributions are valued, and feel comfortable simply existing in their roles.
I'll be attending the Inclusion and Diversity programming in a few short hours. There aren't different tracks for Sunday--and thank goodness, because I'd never be able to pick which sessions to attend! Monday and Tuesday's programming is different, and there are a whopping seventeen (!!) tracks each day to attend. Some folks will find their niche in a single track. As a test engineer, I hop around different tracks as I find topics related to quality assurance and automation. My proposed schedule touches on eight different tracks.
I am very grateful that many of the sessions will be recorded. There are so many time slots where I want to attend multiple talks, but having some of them recorded means I am freed up to explore alternatives and watch the recordings later. Looking over them today compared to the notes I took on Thursday, I notice that a few of the sessions I had hoped to attend are either rescheduled or canceled, which is a bummer.
So, here are my planned sessions:
